Our calendar of events for the week is brimming with concerts, talks, theatrical performances, workshops, music and dance shows, art openings, and festivals! There's a lot to see and do!
Throughout the weekend, the FoodieLand Night Market will take place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
Friday (today), the Center for World Music has once again teamed up with the Mingei to present Cuban Music on the Commons. American-Colombian singer and songwriter Kali Uchis will perform at Viejas Arena. There will be a Kumeyaay New Year Celebration at Cuyamaca Community College. Filipino band OMP Hitmen will perform at the Ramada in National City. At the First Unitarian Universalist Church, Nishi La Tremenda: Opera Deconstructed will happen. Mexican musician, singer, and composer Christian Nodal will perform at the Pechanga Arena. Gilbert Castellanos will perform at the La Jolla Community Center. At the Turquoise Café-Bar Europa, there will be a Nomadic Bohemians Music and Dance Jabberwocks show.
Saturday, there will be a Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at the International Cottages. At the Tierrasanta Library, there will be a talk on the life and works of Michelangelo. You can take a drive up the coast to enjoy the San Marcos Serbian Food Fest. At ArtReach San Diego, there will be a Piñatas Workshop. There will be an Acorn and Gall Natural Dye & Shibori Workshop at the San Diego Craft Collective in Liberty Station. At the Mingei, the San Diego Filipino Film Festival Preview Night Gala will take place. At the Seaside Center for Spiritual Living, there will be another Carnatic Vocal Concert. There will be 2 Grupo Folklorico Herencia Mexicana 5 Year Anniversary shows at the Joan B. Kroc Theatre. At the Henwood Memorial Park in City Heights, a Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival will take place. There will be a Xicano Punk Pop Up Art Exhibit at the Hood Mod Shop on University. Mexican singer Ely Guerra will perform at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido. At the Rancho Penasquitos Ranch House, Dr. Jon Spenard will give a talk on the Ancestral Maya Quarryscapes of the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve in Belize. Alejandro Fernández will perform at Viejas Arena.
Sunday, the 27th annual Encinitas Oktoberfest will take place. The San Diego Sake Festival will take place at Venue 808. At the International Cottages, the House of Korea will hold their annual Lawn Program. Multi-genre Latin group Panteón Rococó will perform at Soma.
Monday, there are a number of concerts to enjoy with Zimbeat at SDSU's Smith Recital Hall, Salma Jahani & Rahe at the Blue Night Banquet Hall, and Stephen Marley at the Belly-Up. And there will be a talk on Frida Kahlo's Art at the Ocean Beach Library.
Tuesday, kids can learn the stories of San Diego's Indigenous people at the Stories of Us: 'ataaxum Pomkwaan event at the Children's Discovery Museum in Escondido. At the San Diego Central Library, the One Book, One San Diego Author Event with Heather McGhee will take place. At Tango del Rey, there will be a Guaracha and Cumbia Class with Cesar Lopez. A Tale of Autumn the concluding film in Eric Rohmer's classic Tales of the Four Seasons series will screen at the Digital Gym. Preview performances for the new play Sumo will begin at La Jolla Playhouse. Regular performances are slated to begin October 3rd.
Wednesday, there will be a Mini Piñatas Teens Workshop at the Coronado Library.
Next Thursday, the San Diego Italian Film Festival will screen the comedy of cultures film Bangla at La Paloma Theatre.
All next weekend, the La Mesa Oktoberfest will take place.
Next Friday and Saturday, the film Cassandro will be shown at the Digital Gym.
Next Friday, San Diego/Alcalá Sister Cities Society and the House of Mexico will present An Evening With Don Quixote at the Hall of Nations in Balboa Park. MiraCosta College Symphony Orchestra will present their Under the Spell of Spain concert. The legendary Banda El Recodo will perform at the Civic Theatre. And you can hear Sentencia2 play at Sierra Madre Cantina.
Next Saturday, the 12th Annual International Dragon Boat Race will take place in Mission Bay. At the Mira Mesa Senior Center, there will be a Silayan Filipina Marketplace. East Village will hold an Oktoberfest at the Quartyard. At the Theatre Box downtown, the Ukrainian film A Rising Fury will be shown. Korea-ful Night at the Balboa Park Club will feature talks, performances and a dinner. At Wild Island Collective, there will be a Hawaiian Lei Po'o Making Workshop. The Irish trad and European folk/rock band Gadan will perform at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Carlsbad. At Rock Steady Jamaican Restaurant, they will hold a Nigerian Independence Celebration.
Next, Sunday the annual Dia de los Muertos - La Experiencia will begin at Fiesta de Reyes in Old Town with displays and more throughout the month. At All Saints Episcopal Church, Classically Ukraine will be a concert of classical works inspired by Ukraine or written by Ukrainian composers. At Quartyard, there will be a Nigeria Independence Day Party. And at White Rice Morena, there will be a Traditional Filipino Kamayan Dinner to kick off Filipino-American History Month.
Local theatrical productions include Evita at the Cygnet Theatre, Cabaret, at the Old Globe, The Savoyard Murders at Scripps Ranch Theatre, Dragon Mama at Diversionary Theatre, Dishwasher Dreams at the White Theatre at the Old Globe, and coming soon, Sumo at the La Jolla Playhouse .
